Background of Shin-Godzilla Chapter 3 : About Japanese army
In this chapter I'd like to have a run-through of post-war history of Japan. I think it's boring story for you so I try to put it briefly as mush as possible...
As you likely know, Japan is a defeated country of World War 2. After Japan accepted the surrender of the Allies in 1945, America-centered occupation forces came to Japan.
Needless to say the purpose of the forces at the time is to prevent Japanese from war again.
So it's the Japanese Constitution which was made by Japanese government under the influence of chief commander Douglas MacArthur in 1947.
In article 9 the constitution said Japanese people renounce war and never maintain forces forever. This is what we call "Pacifist constitution" which is controversial even now.
In 1950 Korean War has begun. Many of occupation forces went to Korean Peninsula and the purpose of them at the time was to maintain public order of Japan and make it seawall against the communist country
So Keisatsu Yobitai(National Police Reserve), which become the predecessor of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, was made for the purpose of complementing Police.
In 1952 Japan won back it's sovereignty by San Francisco Peace Treaty, Occupation forces stopped making an entry but American forces were still there by Japan-U.S. Security Arrangements.
And 2 years after Jieitai(Japan Self-Defense Forces) of now was born and purpose of the force became to defend Japan from direct or indirect invasion.
After that Guidelines for Japan-U.S. Defense Cooperation has been constantly modified and now Jieitai play a role in logistic support of Amerian forces (in this regard Trump tell a lie again !).
Sorry for boring stentence. I think there are 2 key point.
Firstly, I don't mean to say Japan has no merit of U.S.-Japan relations but it's also true Japan has been always swayed by national profit of America.
(After Iraq war has begun in 2003, Japanese politicians were horrified because Deputy state secretary Armitage pressured Japanese government to send troops despite of article 9. Now Shinzo Abe build a stable administration and it seems that condition for constitutional change is right, but the irony is that now chinese GDP overtake Japanese and role of Armitage is to give him a warning "Don't provoke China casually !")
Secondly, from the standpoint of the law Japan normally can's maitain any bullets and guns. It's a argumentative and complicated legal interpretation issue but it is said that Japan is permitted to have
minimum weapons for self-defense in the constitution, nevertheless it's also true Japan has so many legal and social restrictions for usage of the force.
I heard that the scene of "Shin-Godzilla" got a bad name at oversea where prime minister stop attacking because of delay in escape of people. I’d appreciate it if you keep in mind supposedly Jieitai is not 'Army' but 'Self defence force' so even if it were to produce just a one casualty left-leaning party and media, who are allergy to military and believe not American forces but Pacifist constitution keep Japan from war for 70 years, must heavily criticize the government's actions.
It has no direct relation with the movie but in the next chapter I'm expected to write about American force in Japan.
